Alex May is the Technical Director and Co-Founder of EnKore Theatre Company and has had a lifelong passion for technical theatre, stagecraft, and live production. His earliest experiences began with experimenting with elementary school sound and lighting systems and helping build elaborate haunted house experiences each year. Those early opportunities sparked a fascination with the behind-the-scenes magic of theatre that has continued to grow throughout his life and career.

Alex especially loves all aspects of technical theatre and stagecraft, including lighting design, sound engineering, stage management, automation, and production problem-solving. He enjoys exploring how productions achieve complex technical effects and appreciates the teamwork, creativity, and precision required to bring live theatre to life. His experience includes working with ACME Theatre Company in Davis as well as the Davis Shakespeare Ensemble and the Davis Shakespeare Festival, where he collaborated with talented artists, designers, technicians, and performers. Those experiences helped shape his passion for community theatre, technical excellence, and mentorship.

As an educator and mentor, Alex is passionate about helping students experience the “lightbulb moment” when a concept suddenly clicks and their creativity begins to expand. Coming from a family of educators, he deeply values creating spaces where students can experiment, make mistakes, and learn without fear of perfection. He believes that some of the best learning happens through trial, discovery, and hands-on experience. His goal is to help students build confidence, curiosity, capability, and teamwork while developing practical skills they can carry into theatre and beyond.

Alex believes EnKore Theatre Company is special because of its commitment to building true community through theatre. While many organizations focus primarily on the final production, Alex loves that EnKore focuses on developing students through the creative process itself. He believes every role in theatre matters, whether onstage or behind the scenes, and hopes to help students discover that technical theatre roles are just as artistic, creative, and valuable as performing roles. Outside of theatre, Alex enjoys fantasy audiobooks, mentoring robotics teams, swimming, automation and simulation games, carpentry, coffee, IT support, and learning about anything new and interesting that catches his attention. His curiosity and love of learning continue to fuel both his technical expertise and his commitment to helping students grow.
